I often share photos of my beautiful smoothie bowls on Instagram but realised that I rarely share the recipes! They are mega easy, so nutritious and a great way to get the kids involved in healthy eating too.

You will need a food blender, but anything from a nutribullet type thing to a hand blender will work.

What you include taste wise is really up to you, part of the fun is experimenting but what is essential to the thickness and the nutritional benefits is the protein powder. That is what takes it from liquid to thick enough to decorate and fills you up for hours afterwards.

Frozen fruit and vegetables really help too. Have a balance of half fruit, half veg to stop it from getting too sweet. Frozen cauliflower is brilliant as you can’t taste it and it adds nutritional value without altering the flavour. Try and get the value range as the florets are smaller and easier to blend. I always include frozen spinach or kale too, in the pellet form. It does change the colour of the mixture, especially in the vanilla ones!!

The choice of water or milk as your base is again your choice. I avoid dairy as it bloats me and opt for dairy free milks like almond or coconut instead. Dairy free milk don’t tend to froth up either which helps with smoothie bowls.

Start with about 300-500ml of your liquid. Add in 20g of protein powder (available here). Choose your veggies and fruit to compliment the protein flavour. Add one handful of each, or as much as your blender will take. Blend!

The it’s time to get creative. You don’t need to decorate them, but it is really fun to and even if you can’t get your kids to eat the smoothie bowls, just letting them decorate them is still starting conversations about healthy eating.

Decorate with nuts, seeds, matcha powder, coconut, fruit, nut butter, what ever takes your fancy.
