I’ve taken some great photos of me recently, these below are free from any kind of filters or editing.
Except great lighting.
I know where to stand in my house at what times to get the best light for a selfie and it got me thinking. Are you seeing yourself in the best light?
We are too quick to put ourselves down and all too often bat back a compliment with something like “oh this old thing?”. It doesn’t feel natural to just say thank you when someone says something nice about us does it? I wonder why?
Think of someone you love, it could be one of your children, or your partner, or best friend. Now list 5 things you love or admire about them, it could be looks or personality.

Now do the same for yourself. List 5 things you love or admire about yourself.

Was it harder to do your own? I bet it was. And I’d actually put money on you having some points about looks when you did it about someone else, and very few on the list about yourself!
Now switch it round. think of 5 things you think that loved one would write about you. Do they match the things you said? Why is that?
We see others in a wonderful light, especially those that we love. We tell them regularly that we admire them and are proud of them. We tell them their hair looks nice and their outfit is wonderful. Why can’t we shine that same light on ourselves?
Our generation was not bought up to love ourselves and when we see the younger generation posting endless selfies and saying they are great at everything we often ridicule them for being too sure of themselves. I bet that is actually though because we are quite jealous of their confidence and wish we could be more like them.
So here’s the thing, I want you to promise me something. Next time someone pays you a compliment say thank you, don’t follow it with a negative or a brush off. Accept it and see yourself in the light they are seeing you in.
Any one more thing, next time you look in them mirror, no every time from now on I want you to say back to your reflection one thing you love about what you can see.
Can you do that?
