Which is winning in your body, the sugar or the magnesium?

Refined sugar is a zero magnesium product. I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise that you can’t top up your magnesium levels with a Krispy Kreme donut!

Not only that but food such as cakes, biscuits, sweets, desserts are know to nutritionists as ‘anti-nutrients’. They contain no nutrients yet consume nutrients when they are digested, leaving you in deficit.

There are varying reports of exact numbers but for every molecule of sugar you consume you would need to take in between 28 and 54 molecules of magnesium just to break even. That’s a lot of broccoli to make up for your chocolate hobnob!

The more sweet foods you have in your diet the more likely you are to be magnesium (and other nutrient) deficient. A high sugar intake also makes the kidneys excrete more magnesium than they should.

So have a think about your regular food habits, if you are eating well at meal times but snacking on foods full of sugar, you are undoing all the good! I’m not saying that you should be saintly and stay off things like that completely, but if you are still suffering from any of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency then you might need to think about reducing the sugar and see if it has any effect.
