Sounds a bit posh doesn’t it? Maybe it sounds like a new green energy ready to launch for Earth Day!
But it’s actually what you need to make a change in something. That first step. You know you want to do it, you know life will get better if you do it.
But something is stopping you.
That’s when you need Activation Energy. I think it now sounds like a superhero! Activation Energy to the rescue!!!
So where can you get that from?
Let’s explore first why you might be lacking in it to begin with. That idea you want to do, the think that pops up at the strangest of moments, or that keeps you awake at night. What is it?
- Look for a new job?
- Start a new healthier lifestyle?
- End a relationship?
They all have clear pros and cons but require some willpower, a big change in your habits and it may affect other people. Yours may not have been mentioned, but read on and you’ll see that the point is the same.
Let’s look more closely at each one,
- Look for a new job
Or even more extreme, hand in your notice! What is holding your activation energy in this instance is fear. fear of letting people down. Fear of people judging you. Fear of failing. Am I right?
In that case you are letting other people control your life, your destiny, your happiness. I’ve said before in posts that I do believe in taking other people into consideration as I think that is polite. But in to consideration, not stopping you from doing something entirely. And not at the expense of your happiness and your future.
Taking some small, little steps will help you let that activation energy flood in and to wash away that fear, such as,
- write a list of your talents
- talk to a trusted colleague before talking to your boss.
- Dip your toe into the water before taking the plunge so to speak,
Dip your toes into the water before taking the plunge so to speak. It will show you that you don’t have as much to fear as you thought and will help with the activation energy.

- Starting a new healthier lifestyle
Lots of people will say that it is time and/or money that is stopping them in this instance. that’s not actually true. It’s activation energy. It doesn’t cost more money and it doesn’t take any more time to make a salad than it does to make a cheese toasty. You just need to start!
It’s also fear of failing. If you are starting something different, yo are scared of people judging you. How about we get over that and focus on how good we’ll feel if we actually start.
If you want small steps then try these
- make one meal in a day healthier to begin with
- start taking the stairs instead of the lift
- try one new recipe a week
All of these will help to show you that you can do it and there is nothing to be afraid of and instead of dipping your toe in you can dive straight in the deep end!
—————
- End a relationship
This could be a romantic one or a toxic friendship. What is stopping you? Fear of change? Belief that you are good enough for better?
This is a hard one for activation energy. It takes a lot of bravery to walk away from something that you once held with love, even if it isn’t there now.
This is a lot about habit too. If you leave that relationship what will you do instead? It’s actually like leaving a job, if you are well prepared you might cope better with it.
- find other things you can do instead of being with them.
- make new friends
- start a new hobby
This will feed the activation energy enough and boost your self esteem to take the leap.

This isn’t something I have devised, it came from Mel Robins in her book The 5 second rule. If this is something you struggle with I would highly recommend reading it, or even better getting it on audio book. There is something captivating about her reading it to you.
The premise is you count backwards 5,4,3,2,1 and then you just do it, you take action. You fire up that activation energy and make a difference to your life. As I’ve explained, it doesn’t always need to be dealing with the big thing straightaway. You can use it to dip you toe in and get yourself going.

But what is really important is that you do start. Stop waiting for the right time, or for someone to do it for you, do something about it now.
Think of something you have been putting off for ages. Put it in the forefront of your mine. Now think of something you can do about that right now. Not tomorrow, not later on tonight. But now.
Don’t tell me there isn’t anything, because there is always something.
Do it.

Don’t keep reading and pretend that you have when you haven’t! I know! I’ll find out!

Love this post! It’s so true and my brain is now ticking in overdrive!
Let me know if I can help!
Hi Kimberley
Nice blog, I am fortuntate to have always had a strong desire to make healthy changes due to very chronic and rare health chalenges from a young age. But my challenges were for many years the people pleaser being so conditioned to put everyone’s needs first. Very common with HSP’s who do not want to hurt or reject anyone. So yes for too many years this was my big depletor of energy force
